If you're taking a Danube River cruise and flying into or out of Munich Airport (MUC), planning your transfers is key. While the Danube River does not flow through Munich, the city is a major gateway to the region and a convenient access point for river cruises. Many itineraries start or end in Vilshofen, Passau, Regensburg, or even Nuremberg, all of which are well connected to Munich by train or private transfers.
Easiest Option: Cruise Line Transfers
Most river cruise companies offer pre-arranged transfers between Munich Airport and your embarkation or disembarkation city. In some cases, these are included with your cruise fare, while others offer them for an additional fee. This is the simplest way to travel, as it eliminates logistics and ensures a smooth transition. If you're unsure whether your cruise includes a transfer, ask your travel advisor or the cruise line directly.
Independent Transfer Options
If the cruise transfer is unavailable or cost-prohibitive, you can easily reach your river cruise starting or ending point by train and taxi. Here’s how:
1️⃣ Taxi from the Cruise Port to the Train Station
Each of the Danube cruise ports has a train station nearby. A quick taxi ride (usually 5-15 minutes) will get you from your ship to the station.
2️⃣ Train to Munich
From Passau or Regensburg: Direct trains to Munich Central Station (München Hauptbahnhof, Hbf) take about 1 to 1.5 hours and are relatively inexpensive.
From Vilshofen: Typically requires a short train ride to Passau first, then onward to Munich.
From Nuremberg: A direct high-speed train to Munich takes about 1 hour.
3️⃣ Where to Stay in Munich
If you’re spending just one night, there are many hotels near Munich Central Station (Hbf), but we recommend staying a bit closer to Marienplatz, the heart of the old town. This area offers a more immersive Munich experience, with great walkability, dining, and attractions.
Key Highlights Near Marienplatz:✔ Marienplatz – The city’s main square, home to the famous Glockenspiel.✔ Hofbräuhaus – One of Munich’s most famous beer halls, rich in history.✔ Viktualienmarkt – A fantastic open-air market for local food and drinks.
4️⃣ Getting to Munich Airport (MUC)
By Train: The S-Bahn S1 or S8 lines connect Munich Central Station (Hbf) to Munich Airport in about 45 minutes. This is the most reliable and cost-effective option, but keep in mind you’ll need to carry your luggage between platforms.
By Taxi: A direct taxi from Munich Central or Marienplatz to the airport takes around 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic, and costs about €80-100.
How Much Time Should You Spend in Munich?
If you’re considering a pre- or post-cruise stay, we highly recommend at least 2 nights, but ideally 3-4 nights to fully explore Munich and nearby attractions like Neuschwanstein Castle, Dachau Memorial, and the Bavarian Alps.
Public Transportation & Language
Munich has an excellent tram, subway (U-Bahn), and bus system, making it easy to get around. While many locals speak English, it’s always helpful to learn a few basic German phrases, though most signs include English translations.
Final Tips
✔ If your cruise includes airport transfers, use them!✔ If traveling independently, trains + short taxi rides are the best option.✔ Stay near Marienplatz for a more immersive Munich experience.✔ Use the S-Bahn train to the airport unless you prefer a taxi for convenience.✔ If you have time, spend at least 2-4 nights in Munich to explore the best of Bavaria.
Navigating Munich to your Danube River cruise is completely doable with a little planning. Whether you take the cruise line’s transfer or travel independently, it’s a smooth and enjoyable way to start or end your river cruise adventure!
